Our first annual concert "Noche de Alegria" held at Le Petit Trianon Theater on August 23, was a great success thanks to the support of friends, family, and community! The program started with a reception in the courtyard prior to the concert. Appetizers and drinks were served. The program opened with folklorico dancers followed by a trio. After intermission, Mariachi San Jose took the stage and performed traditional favorites. The audience joined in the singing of some the the songs. Mariachi San Jose was one of the headliners at the Semana de Mexico en Barcelona, Spain. The group, the manager, and four fans (total of 15) flew out on September 9th from San Francisco Airport to Barcelona, Spain. Mariachi San Jose managed to get all their instruments and luggage to and from SF to Spain without any problems! Lots of luggage, backpacks, computers to stay connected to home, and instruments. The first two days after arrival in Spain was spent trying to get over the jetlag. However, it was not long before everyone was ready to go see the sites. We visited many of the tourist sites including the Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Guell, La Pedreda, Las Ramblas, Olimpic Village, Poblo Espanol, the Harbor, and several museums. By the time we were ready to come back, we were all experts in getting around riding the subway (Metro). The weather was wonderful, the people very hospitable, and spending time in the city of Barcelona was very relaxing. The group did a live television interview Friday morning and had the rest of the day to explore the city. On Saturday, they performed a one-hour set in the afternoon and then another set that evening. They also performed on Sunday. The audience was great and lots of pictures were taken with the group and there were many autograph requests. There was also several complimentary write-ups about the group's performance in the local newspaper. The experience for everyone was wonderful! Thanks to the support of the community for making this educational experience possible for the members of Mariachi San Jose. As all good things must end, Mariachi San Jose boarded their return flight from Barcelona to San Francisco on September 17th. The flight coming back was approximately 14 hours so everyone had plenty of time to sleep on the plane and try to recuperate since they all had to go back to school the next day! Pictures of the trip will be posted soon.
